The beauty of Holiness
There’s a wonder of sunset at evening, There’s a wonder at sunrise I see, But the wonder of wonders that thrills my soul Is the wonder that God loves me. O the wonder of it all, the wonder of it all Just to know that God loves me.”
Psalm 33-1 Be glad in the Lord, O doers of righteousness; for praise is beautiful for the upright
Psalm 33:1 Sing for joy in the LORD, O you righteous ones; Praise is becoming to the upright.
Psalm
147:1 Praise the LORD! For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant and praise is becoming
Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.” Worship the Lord in the glorious sanctuary.”
The Beauty of Holiness "Give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness" (Psalm 29:2). When King David transported the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem he delivered a special psalm into the hands of Asaph and the other musicians. In it he exalted the Lord: "Give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name: bring an offering, and come before Him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness" (I Chronicles 16:29).
Psalm 96:6 "Honor and majesty are before Him: strength and beauty are in His sanctuary." Verse 9 gives "O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before Him, all the earth." This is not an outward beauty, for the prophet told of Christ that "when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him" (Isaiah 53:2). Rather, it is a beauty of character . . . an inward righteousness. It was the searching of this beauty that became David's life mission: "One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple" (Psalm 27:4). This Scriptural phrase occurs again during the reign of King Jehosophat. The prophet had predicted a great victory if Israel would just believe and let God do the fighting. II Chronicles 20:21-22 records, "And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army." In glorifying God's beauty Jehosophat enjoyed a tremendous victory. We should seek to meditate upon God's beauty and let it radiate from our lives
"And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us" (Psalm 90:17).DW
The Psalmist said of God in Psalm 50:2; “Out of Zion, (the church) the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.” Out of the church, perfected forever by Christ’s one sacrifice for sin, God has shined forth in the face of Jesus Christ to reveal God’s glory. (2 Corinthians 4:6) The beauty of holiness is seen in this Sovereign, Just God and Savior.
Why are we commanded twice to worship this Just God? V4, “For,” because of who He is. He is both, a Just God and a Savior: as such:
1.He alone is to be praised. V-4 The Hebrew word “praised” is the word, “yaw-daw’, which means, “to confess.” Justified sinners confess that all their salvation is in the Lord Jesus Christ and his righteousness imputed. This is true praise. 2.He alone is to be feared. V-4 this is not a legal fear flowing from a guilty conscience but the natural results of a conscience purged from guilt by the blood of Christ, giving reverence and respect to the One True and Living God. 3.He alone is distinguished from all idols. V-5 This Just God and Savior is the Sovereign Creator. All other gods are idols and every sinner by nature has one. 4.He alone saves. V-6 “Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.” God’s sanctuary is Christ. Christ is our Altar, He is our Sacrifice, and He is our High Priest. He offered his sinless humanity upon the Altar of his Deity and God accepted that sacrifice, evidenced by Christ’s resurrection from the dead. It was his strength that broke the bonds of death by perfect satisfaction to law and justice that liberated his people..” The beauty of holiness truly is in the perfections of God’s character.
